I started teaching myself at a very young age and so the process naturally lead to producing photos, graphics, and videos. After working in multimedia for almost ten years now, I don’t care about design as much as I used to. To me, the product is more important and design can only come second. So I get more geeked out on building strong products these days. Pretty graphics are meaningless unless they support a great program or product.

GH3

GH3

Bike to hike!

Bike to hike!

Just got done editing a few photos from the shoot with Mazama...

Just got done editing a few photos from the shoot with Mazama Outdoors. $79.99 - Peak...

Photo provided by www.peakdesignltd.com.

Photo provided by www.peakdesignltd.com.

An Essential for Hiking and Climbing Photographers

$79.99 - Peak Design Capture System at Pro Photo Supply (in Portland, OR)

In search of a camera carrying system that would allow me quick access to my camera while hiking, I came across the Peak Design Capture System. I took the Capture System out on various hikes to test it’s durability, functionality, quick access, and comfort over several hours of hiking. Here are my findings for the Peak Design Capture System:

Overview:
The Capture System is simply a clamping device that secures your camera to your belt or backpack’s shoulder strap. It utilizes a plate that screws right into your camera’s tripod mount and then slides down into the clamping mechanism attached to you. After the camera is locked in place, you can quickly release it by holding in a button and lifting your camera out. Designed with the hiker in mind, I was really excited to test this product out. I took it on a 6 mile round trip hike at Silver Lake, OR, even tho this was more of a recreational hike it still gave me ample opportunities to get a feel for it. For this test, I attached the device to my backpack’s shoulder strap.

Durability:
The thing is made out of metal, it’s pretty darn durable. It actually sliced open my finger while I was taking out the plate. I wasn’t even mad, I’d rather it be built too sturdy, especially with holding thousands of dollars worth of camera equipment to you.

Functionality:
After a handful of adjustments, the device functions as advertised and securely held my camera to my backpack strap. I didn’t experience much side to side or up and down camera movement as I was hiking. Because of the weight of the camera though, it did tilt a little bit forward, but I was really expecting it to be much worse. At no point did I feel like it was going to fall off though. The device has a redundant lock too, which lets you control the tension of the plate sliding in and out, this is key for stopping accidental release.

Access to Camera:
This was absolutely amazing and exactly what I was looking for. I could honestly un-clip the camera, pull up for a shot and re-clip it in a matter of seconds. Especially with nature photography, this is really crucial if timing is everything.

Comfort:
As I mentioned before, it does take a handful of adjustment to get the positioning of the Capture System, your camera, and your backpack right. I had a problem where the lens was getting in the way of my swaying arms, so I eventually had to rotate my camera so the lens was pointing towards the center of my body. After I positioned it correctly, I hardly noticed the thing was even there, even with the metal backside of the clamp against my body. With this design, the backpack really took all of the weight for me.

Verdict:
Overall the Peak Design Capture System is great if you’re looking for a
secure way to keep your camera on hand while you’re hiking. Luckily this isn’t an issue for me, but you really need a sturdy backpack to make this work for you. I used a Burton F-Stop Pack and had no problems at all, but it’s really just a matter of camera weight. If your shoulder strap isn’t thick and strong enough, I could really see it sagging from your chest. So this might not work for everyone’s gear.

Fortunately, Pro Photo Supply in Portland, OR allowed me to demo this product, and I sadly have to return. I’ll be purchasing one of these very soon though and I look forward to utilizing it on most of my hikes from now on.
